Ypres salient

The Ypres salient  tells the tale of the British army that was involved in defending this little corner of Flanders. Ieper (Ypres) is an old town in the west of Flanders, famous for its linen trade with England during the middle ages. Ieper earned a bloody reputation during the first world war as the fighting around Ieper raged throughout the war in contrast to Verdun. Three big battles were fought around this Flemish town in 1914, 1915 and 1917.
